Using Surface Design Techniques to Decorate Vessels Ceramics I + II Mixed grade levels Students created vessels that emphasized the surface decoration as the primary focus of the design, in contrast with the form. They learned multiple surface design techniques, including Mishima (inlaid slip), sgraffito, paper stenciling, image transfers, slip trailing, water etching, wax resist glazing etc. The first utilized these techniques on test tiles, then after experimenting, students created a vessel using their favorite techniques. Designing Graphic Tees with Photoshop and Screen Printing Digital Media and Design II + III Mixed grade levels Students used Adobe Photoshop and screen printing to create graphic tees that made a statement about something they are passionate about. The statement could be a personal, social, or political issue, as abstract or literal as they want. After creating the design in Photoshop, students digitally print their designs onto contact paper, then cut out the design to make a stencil that was stuck down to their screen. They then screen printed on their shirts. Narrative Critique
An exercise in art criticism and creative writing In this exercise, students will critique the work of their peers by creating a narrative inspired by the work. Students will trade works with someone in the class and write a story about the work that describes what is happening in the work. They will imagine the work is alive, and describe who this work is. The exercise is intended to show students that the way they perceive their own work may differ greatly from the way it is perceived by a peer. After receiving feedback, students will write a reflection on how they felt about their peers’ interpretation. Altered Photographs Using photography and mixed media to explore inner and outer identity Students will alter photographic self portraits with embroidery and other media to explore their inner vs. outer identity. They will begin with a photography portion, in which they will set up, shoot, edit and print self portraits. They will then use embroidery and other media of their choosing to explore how their inner self differs from their outward appearance. They may take many approaches to this concept, ranging from biological inner structures, to how past experience shapes identity, to fashion and appearance, and so on. |
